Writing in ProStart

Good Morning everyone,

I hope you are recovering from all of the rain and wind Sandy has dropped on us!  Today I would like to begin a new project within our ProStart class curriculum.  As all of you know, there has been an added element of academics to my program over the past year.  What some of you may not realize is that I am doing this for your benefit!

As I've said over and over in class, “being a Chef isn't just about being a good cook…”.  We have all discussed this and I hope you understand the reasons for this statement.  I would like for you to comment on this blog about why you think we are writing in our class.

Give me at least one reason you think writing is so important and explain your statement.  You will be graded on this assignment, so please take it seriously and try to be creative.

Look at those beautiful apples...

  2. I believe writing is important because it expresses your feelings, emotions, opinions, and your own explaination of a topic. It shows another person that you may not know how you express the feelings you have towards a certain subject.

  3. Writing lets us get our voice and thoughts together in one place. It helps us get our voice out there and makes us think about the subject we write about. We put our opinions are feelings into writing which in turn gives us a voice and a chance to speak with just something on a piece a paper. For example, a cover letter for a job lets you state how much you want the job in that industry and to also give a little information about yourself before you meet the interviewer. All in all writing is important and we use it as a way to state our opinions.

  4. I think we are writing in this class because it shows us that there is more to being a chef that just cooking that a chef has to do more than just that, and that he need to know how to write and type letters along with costing and knowing how to cook so thats why i feel you have had us write in this class this year.

  6. Writing is a skill that is needed in every field. It helps to express what we think and feel. We're writing in this class to assist us in that aspect. A chef would need to communicate with his workers and costumers in many different ways, writing included. I also think that everything we've written in this class is useful for learning about the Hospitality industry, and anyway writing is fun!

    1. BINGO!

The idea I was hoping to get across here was "communication" Why is it so important to be able to communicate with our staff, customers, purveyors, and everyone else?
Not only communicate, but communicate properly.

  7. Writing in this class is important, because you can always learn how to cook and memorize recipes, but to truely know all of the inside details of this class, of this profession, You have to study everything, and writing this knowledge down, ensures that you know what you have been studying. The Culinary profession isnt just about cooking, it's knowing.

  8. I think that writing is important because, it gives you a sense of knowledge on what your talking about. It gives you a chance to "think before you speak" so to say. Plus some people are more comfortable to write it down then speak out loud.

  10. I feel as though writting expands the imagination. Giving you a different outlook on things. You must have a vast imagination to be a chef. Also you must be very good at vocabulary.

  11. I believe that writing is important in this class, or field in general, because like you said "It's not all about cooking." When you have us do these assignments that involove writing it opens our eyes to a whole new prospective of this class. It enables us to learn about other chefs that have had, or do have, the same passions as we do now. Also it allows us to be able to work with the other students in our class so that we can learn to work better in groups and as a team; this then helps us in the kitchen when we have to work with others. When you give us some of our writing assignments it helps you get to know more about us and what we want to do in life. Some of the writing assignments that we do help prepare us for going in the kitchen; the FATTOM project will remain in my head because we had an assignment that was interesting to do. Its a way to get us more amped to be in the kitchen and appreciate the time we are given in there as well since we don't have all the time in the world to be in there.

  12. Writing is important because in this profession you cant just cook and expect your restaurant to run itself. You have menus, recipes, procedures, ect; without any of this you won't have a successful business. Communication and consistancy are key in this industry without writing it can be hard to have either of these

  13. Writing is just as important in this class becuase there are collge entry tests. That colleges will look at to get into your dream colloege. Also if there is a job that involes writing and you are not a very good writer you may not get the job that you want. In all in all writing is just as important as cooking in this class.

  14. I feel that writing is important because it teaches you to be grammatically correct, and it also helps you practice for when you go to write menus and invoices for your restaurant. And like Bucky said before ^, most people are more comfortable writing it out then speaking. (CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST QUOTED BUCKY!)

  15. The importance of writing is severe. Reason being is that we will be writing for the rest of our lives and in every job we get. Writing helps out on skills like word usage and sentance structure. Where if you can use them in a sentance correctly people will think you know what you are talking about. Therfore writing is an importance in our daily lives these days

  16. Chef Brown I believe that it’s important to know how to write good because how could you get people to come to your restaurant if you can't write your menu well. How could you get funding for your restaraunt if you can't write to sponsors and persuade them to give your money. Being able to write well is a skill needed in any profession.

  17. I think that we are writing in this class because it is important for us to have experience in the business side of the culinary feild, not only the actual cooking part. this because we need to learn how to have manegment skills and these assingments show us those skills.

  18. I think we are writing more in class to possibly learn how to use our words better. Communication is very important in the kitchen and from chef/cook to customers.

  22. We write in this class because it is very important to beable to form proper sentence structure. Bcause no matter where we get a job its impotant in every job feild to beable to write. Plus you need to know what words go where so you sound educated.

  23. Writing helps use your imagination in a creative way! We use writing in different ways all the time, and being in this industry there are many things that we need writing for. Things like writing menus.

  24. Writing is important because it's like the key to communication. Without good communication, working in this industry would not work out too well! If you're going to be a chef you have to write up menus and put in inventory, etc, so obvs you have to know how to write in order to do that.

    1. You got it dude!
As chefs, our primary role is to communicate our "expectations" to our staff, our "standards" to our cooks, our "appreciation" to our guests, and our "needs" to our product sources.

      Good thinking.

  25. I think that writing is important because it expands your learning skills and your communication skills. Its good that we are writing more in class because it shows that this class is not just about cooking. Its about developing the education we will need to be in the food industry.

  26. Agreeing with all of these statements, what really sticks out for me would be the education side. Writing not only expands your grammar but also reminds you of common sentence structures and spelling. Yes, writing is also a part of the industry through communication and passing of information.

  27. I think we are writing in class is becuase its not just about the hands on experance with cooking. You have to know how to take care of the paper work to if you want to be a chef.

  28. We are doing more writing activities so we can broaden our knowledge not only in the kitchen, but in life. Cooking is not the only thing you do in a kitchen. You have to read the Ingredients before you can move onto the next thing, so reading and writing is a good place to start.

  29. Writing is important because it can express creativity, like cooking can.
